A distorted idea of the future

There is an argument that Linux has lost the opportunity to become a desktop operating system for the masses. The perception is that Windows and Apple appear to be entrenched for the foreseeable future. For some the argument goes as far to declare that the desktop is no longer relevant. I think that it is too early to declare a winner. I would argue that looking for a clear cut winner is contrary to choice.
Computer operating systems that have been available for a mass market, have only been widely in use for twenty years. Defining the future based on the first twenty years of anything will create a distorted idea of the future. The first twenty years of the aviation industry did not indicate that within sixty years men would walk on the Moon.
Linux and its advocates needs to look to the future and dream a bigger picture. The competition is driven by short term profit and shareholders. Theirs is a future based on profit.  Linux is a future based on possibilities not profit.
